Pioneer of Quantum-HPC Hybrid Platform with RIKEN
The system was deployed as part of a project commissioned by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and became fully operational in 2025. Today, Reimei serves as the quantum core of a hybrid quantum-HPC platform integrated with Fugaku, Japan’s flagship supercomputer, and ROQUO, GPU supercomputer.
Designed to combine the strengths of quantum computing and high-performance computing (HPC), Reimei enables researchers to explore scientific and industrial challenges that are difficult to address using conventional computing alone. Hybrid quantum-HPC workflows are already being applied to areas such as quantum chemistry, materials science, and life sciences, helping advance research relevant to drug discovery and next-generation materials.
In 2026, Reimei is upgraded from Quantinuum’s System Model H1 (20 qubits) to System Model H2 (56 qubits), expanding computational scale and capability for increasingly sophisticated hybrid computing applications. Today, Reimei stands as a key platform supporting the growth of Japan’s quantum ecosystem and the development of practical quantum computing applications.
